The Historical Whitehaven

Whitehaven is a historical town that is one of the most picturesque in Cumbria, and has a lot of beauty and history to offer. If you take a walk through the town you will find a lot of history to take in alongside historical buildings, there are around 250 listing buildings in the space of just a few streets almost all from the 1700’s and early 1800’s so there is plenty to be explored.

With trade links all over the world, the maritime port of Whitehaven was once the third largest in the UK. Up until the early 17th century, Whitehaven was a village that mainly lived off of salt-making, farming and fishing up until the Lowther family came to the town. The town was developed by the wealthy Lowther family, with the town’s prosperity being built on coal.

Whitehaven has a historic 17th century harbour, enhanced by a new marina in 2009, dramatic lighting effects and nautical sculptures. There has been a lot of restoration carried out in both the town centre and harbour over the years, and has plenty of attractions that are worth visiting. As a part of an ongoing regeneration programme, there have been improvements made to the harbour as well as a very careful restoration of the town’s historical Georgian buildings.
